Growing Awareness and Hair-ness for Cancer

If you notice more men sporting facial hair over the next four weeks, there’s a good…great reason – No-Shave November!

No-Shave November or Movember, as it’s more famously known, is a month-long campaign in which participants forgo shaving and grooming to raise awareness about cancer. This campaign also creates a fun way to remind people that many of our friends, family and neighbors struggle every day to fight this disease. In addition, the organizers of these charities encourage participants to donate the money they’d normally spend for shaving and grooming during the month to non-profit organizations that support cancer research and education.

Although No-Shave November and Movember are used interchangeably, they are two initiatives founded by two different charities. Movember Foundation, the older charity of the two, was started by a group of 30 people in Melbourne, Australia in 2004 who decided to quit shaving for 30 days to raise awareness of prostate cancer and depression in men. Over the past 17 years, this movement has grown and is now observed in several other countries. No-Shave November was started in 2009 by the Chicago-based Hill Family, two years after the passing of Matthew Hill due to colorectal cancer. Hill and his family had already adopted the practice of not shaving during the month of November and donating the money typically spent on razors, shaving cream, etc. to charities that support research into prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer, as well as others.

So, as November commences, put down the razors, scissors and clippers and don those beards for cancer prevention. Since 2009, “No-Shavers” have helped raise over $12,000,000 for this great cause!
